Special book week visitors

Wow! What an amazing day we have had.  This morning The Gruffalo made a special appearance.  He was very popular, even Mr Burton and Mr Pring wanted a picture!

Then, this afternoon, Andy from Cbeebies came to visit!  The children were speechless!

Many thanks to both our special visitors for helping make Book Week even more memorable than usual.

Book making

As part of Book Week, every child has been making their own book.  Different year groups have been learning how to make different kinds of book.  Year 3 have made some lovely pop up books.

Whilst Year 6 look quite puzzled about how they are going to turn these simple resources into spectacular books.  Check back soon for the results!

Read for my school

The school has successfully run the Read for my School competition for the past few years in Year 6.  This year we are opening up the competition to all of KS2.  All  you need to do is read as many books as you can and record them on the website (what a great way to spend half term!).  You can read actual paper books (from home, school, the library, shops e.t.c.) and there are over 150 online books available on the website.

Go to: www.readformyschool.co.uk
Username: Your first and last name
Password: Your AR/STAR username (you can find this in your yellow reading record.  It needs to be in capitals)
Class code 847912

The competition runs till the end of next term. Teachers will be nominating pupils who have read the most books and who have written the best book review.  Good luck!

Reading Recovery Read Aloud

This is a very special week for Reading Recovery teachers like myself.  The Reading Recovery team at the International Literacy Centre share the mission of  Save the Children's 'Read on Get on' campaign to ensure that by 2025 every child is a confident reader by age 11.  All over the country children who are having/have had Reading Recovery are reading to someone special.

At Cabot, some Year 1 children have read one of their favourite stories to a local police officer and some Year 5 children read to Paul Jacobs, Service Director, Education and Skills, Bristol City Council.  All the visitors were very impressed with the children's reading.  The Year 5's in particular read with such expression that Mr Jacobs wants to read the books himself so he can find out how the stories end!

Of course the most important person a child can read with is someone from their own family.  Please make a special effort this week to sit back, relax and listen to your child read - you'll be in for a treat!

New books in the library!

Before Christmas we asked all the children to make some suggestions about books that they thought were missing from the library. I was overwhelmed by all the suggestions, and I spent quite some time sorting through them all and ordering lots of new books. So... I can happily say that now they have arrived!

Here is just a sample of the new books we have, and some of the children who recommended them:

Wilson, Jacqueline - The Suitcase Kid (Halima, Y5) and The Worst Thing About My Sister (Faiza, Y6)

Orme, David - Boffin Boy (Abdirahman I, Y5)

Freedman, Dan - Jamie Johnson: World Class (Abdirahim C, Y5)

Werle, Simone - 13 Fashion Styles All Children Should Know (Tanieka & Fatima, Y5)

Sparkes, Ali - Finding the Fox: The Shapeshifter Series (Miss Cartlidge)

O' Reilly, Sean - New Monster in School and The King of Halloween Castle
(Mackenzie, Y4)

There were also some titles that LOTS of you recommended. These are also now in the library!

Kinney, Jeff - Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul

Walliams, David - Awful Auntie

Simon, Francesca - Horrid Henry's Nightmare
